What is Custom Blade-Free LASIK?

Just what the name implies, Custom Blade-free LASIK procedures are performed entirely with laser technology, and involve no metal cutting instruments. For many years, it was widely perceived by the public that laser correction surgery did not require any cutting, simply because of the word “laser.” In reality, the corrective aspect of the procedure involves a reshapement of the cornea, and therefore a flap must be created in order to reach this area. Originally, and in many treatment centers today, an oscillating blade known as a microkeratome is utilized to create the corneal flap.

Now, more and more frequently, procedures involve the use of lasers only, for both the creation of the flap and the corneal reshapement. This is known as “dual laser or all laser technology.” Additionally, Blade-free Custom LASIK, with its dual laser technology, greatly improves the accuracy of the entire, two-step vision correction process through the use of state-of-the-art computer technology.

Procedure Customization of Dual Laser Technology

Very simply, lasers optimize a doctor’s ability to customize the vision correction treatment to suit a patient’s specific needs – in a way that traditional microkeratome procedures do not. By tailoring the laser to each patient’s individual eyes through a 3D image scan, the doctor can create the necessary corneal flap (step one) that is the precise size, shape and depth needed to access the area of the cornea that will be reshaped (step two).
