Viso Lasik Medspas Epi-LASIK

What is Epi-LASIK?

A type of hybrid vision correction procedure, Epi-LASIK combines techniques used in both LASIK and LASEK, and is aimed at reducing some of the potential risks involved with the first step in the two-step process of LASIK: the creation of the corneal flap.

Epi-LASIK Differences

Both LASIK and LASEK involve cutting in some way the outer layer of the cornea, or epithelium, whether by using a microkeratome or laser. However, Epi-LASIK incorporates the use of a blunt, plastic oscillating blade instead of LASEK’s much finer blade. The process is most similar to LASEK in that the epithelium is left in a thin sheet that keeps its hinge on the eye. Then, instead of using alcohol to loosen the super-thin epithelium from the cornea, as is the process in LASEK, the doctor uses an epithelial separator. This is the favored process for patients who, for any reason, might be susceptible to a reaction to alcohol. Like PRK and LASEK, Epi-LASEK is designed for patients who have thinner corneas, and for that reason would not do well with the slightly thicker flap that is created with LASIK.

The Epi-LASIK Process

The process by which the epithelium naturally reattaches itself to the cornea, called epithelialization, can take up to three days. For this reason, the final stage of the Epi-LASIK procedure includes the placement of a highly oxygen-permeable contact over the eye that allows for epithelialization to occur, and also serves to protect the eye. Most patients are able to resume driving in about a week, and report significant improvement (20/20 – 20/40) to their vision in the same amount of time. Some report a gradual increase in visual improvement and acuity over a period of about three to six months.

What to Expect

As with all vision correction laser treatments, there is temporary (1 – 2 days) mild to moderate discomfort in the form of scratchiness, but generally managed with over-the-counter painkillers. The procedure takes only about five minutes per eye, with most patients returning after a week or two to have the second eye done.
