Viso Lasik Medspas Understanding LASIK
What is LASIK?
The term LASIK is an acronym for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, and is the most commonly performed vision correction procedure performed in the United States today. The two-step process used in LASIK treatment is aimed at the reduction or complete elimination of dependence on glasses or contact lenses. LASIK is used to treat a variety of sight conditions, including myopia (nearsightedness), Hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. With LASIK, the cornea, or clear covering on the front of the eye, is permanently reshaped using an excimer (cool ultraviolet beam) laser. The process of performing LASIK, as well as certain other vision correction procedures is two-fold: first, a corneal flap is created, and second, the cornea itself is reshaped.
How is LASIK Performed?
Today, most LASIK procedures involve the use of two lasers: one to create the flap, and the other for reshaping. Prior to the use of “dual laser technology,” a microkeratome, or oscillating blade was used to create the corneal flap. Laser beam technology has allowed doctors to create thinner, more precise and customized corneal flaps, and this “laser only” process is now the more common method used by treatment centers around the country. While there is still debate as to the merits of laser vs. microkeratome, most healthcare professionals will agree that the most important factor in any surgical situation remains the experience and expertise of the doctor performing the procedure.
Regardless of the technology used to create the flap, the doctor then uses an excimer laser to ablate microscopically small bits of tissue from the cornea, resulting in its desired reshaping. The flap is then folded-over, back into place. Most LASIK procedures take as little as five minutes per eye, with patients reporting a significant improvement in vision by the next day.
