Dr. Salvatore M. DeCanio, Jr., a South Florida native, is Chief Medical Director and Managing Member of Viso Lasik Medspas. He is a founding Executive Board Member of the Optometric Council on Refractive Technology, a nationwide group dedicated to the advancement of vision correction. He was also the founder and Executive Director of Palm Beach Eyes in Boca Raton and Boynton Beach, Florida.

Often called upon nationwide by eye doctors and surgeons for refractive surgery consultations, Dr. DeCanio has overseen more than 80,000 procedures involving varied refractive vision correction technologies. His experience in the assessment and management of the before, during and after care of the LASIK patient has contributed to his reputation as a leader in the field of refractive surgery. He has worked closely with several world renowned eye surgeons and has been a clinical investigator for numerous laser eye systems. Dr. DeCanio was also actively involved in investigational studies that led to approvals of expanding treatments, including the first ever farsightedness and hyperopic astigmatism procedures in the state of Florida. Additionally, he participated in the early US trials of intraocular lenses for extremely high corrections not approved for LASIK.

Dr. DeCanio underwent successful monovision LASIK vision correction for very high nearsightedness while serving as the Clinical and Executive Director of TLC Laser Eye Center in Boca Raton. Through his own successful experience with LASIK, Dr. DeCanio strongly feels he can better relate to patients throughout their treatment.

A native of Boynton Beach, Florida, Dr. DeCanio’s mentor was his father’s best friend, who happened to be a pathologist. Not only did he treat Dr. DeCanio like a son, he inspired him to realize his dream of helping others through the pursuit of medicine. That is exactly what he did.

A cum laude graduate of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Dr. DeCanio earned his Doctor of Optometry degree with honors from the University of Houston. He then went on to complete an elective residency in hospital-based Optometry and Ocular Disease at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After completing his residency in 1981, Dr. DeCanio returned to Boynton Beach and started a private practice that flourished over the next 20 years in both Boynton Beach and Boca Raton.

During that time, Dr. DeCanio has served as co-chairman of the nationally-acclaimed Palm Beach Winter Seminar, which he co-founded, as well as Adjunct Clinical Professor at Nova Southeastern College of Optometry where he continues to educate. Dr. DeCanio is an active member of several optometric associations, including the Southern Council of Optometry and the Palm Beach Country Optometric Association.

Treating others with compassion is a top priority in Dr. DeCanio’s life. He credits his parents for inspiring him to strive for excellence and integrity. Motivated by faith and conviction, Dr. DeCanio lives by the maxim “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

When he is not overseeing the day-to-day operations of Visa LASIK, Dr. DeCanio can be found participating in Palm Beach area golf tournaments and enjoying the company of his two children.
